I spent some time yesterday reading about Jackson Pollock and felt connected to his wisdom of long ago. Pollock said “Painting is self-discovery: Every artist paints what he / she is.” I think about this at this very moment and find these words to have both surface and deeper meaning. On the surface and focusing solely on Art – painting truly is self discovery. It gives one limitless opportunity to explore styles and directions that are an integral part of you / one of a kind. In some sense it can be defined as freedom in a world often hampered by constraints thus an outlet of great magnitude. Conversely, as you reflect in a broad brush macro view, Art build’s far beyond what is actually on the canvas. As a child you are born with a blank canvas as your life at that moment is open to all discoveries with no history. Yet somehow when arriving at adulthood many are bogged down with layer upon layer on their respective life canvas, sometimes covering up the ability to bring you back to your core. The beauty and joy of Art allows us to come back to that period of self discovery, a roadmap if you will to to bring you back to your true essence.
I continue my nocturnal approach in the studio working on multiple paintings of oil, acrylic, mixed media, and surfboard resin….yes a bit smelly but the outcome remains unique.....

“Living Life in the Abstract” -While flying East today I ponder what correlation can be made about the beauty and creative process of abstract art and living life in the abstract. I find parallels in this thought as abstract art allows the flexibility to explore new directions you have not considered. Then often as you follow such a path the results become pathless - thus unique, unexpected, often uplifting in the eyes of the artist and the viewer. Conversely, life at its very core regularly unfolds in the abstract as we live in perpetual change – in essence walking down a well worn , predictable, and sometimes homogenous path only to find yourself diverted to the abstract, the unknown, with a new set of opportunities, challenges and experiences on the horizon .
I look forward to evening creativity in the studio this upcoming week on a new exploration of Oil, Surfboard Resin, Mixed Media and Acrylic combined on Canvas
